Dr. Khawaja Shahzad, M.D.
Dr. Shahzad graduated from the Dow University of Health Sciences, located in Karachi, Pakistan in 1992. After completing a one year combined Medical/ Surgical Internship, he moved to the USA, where he did basic cardiovascular research at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. He began his residency program at the Detroit Medical Center/ Wayne State University in 1995 and completed a 5-year program combining both Adult and Child and Adolescent training. He pursued his Child and Adolescent fellowship at the Hawthorn Center in Livonia, MI where he also performed his duties as a chief resident. He was the recipient of the Joseph B. Fischhoff award for outstanding residents during his fellowship.
After completing his fellowship, he joined Caro Center, a State of Michigan hospital, as a staff psychiatrist. During his time at Caro Center, he was the Director of the Impulse Control Disorder Unit, which housed adult patients with a history of aggression and conduct disorders, among others. During that time, he also served as a Clinical Assistant Professor for Michigan State University where he was involved in teaching MSU students.
In 2004, he joined an outpatient mental health agency based in Toledo, OH which specialized in the treatment of mental health issues of children and adolescents. In 2008, he and his colleagues decided to establish their own independent practice, Comprehensive Behavioral Health Services, where he works to this day. He is also a staff child and adolescent psychiatrist at Toledo Children's Hospital, where he has been providing inpatient services since 2004.
Dr. Shahzad is Board Certified in Adult, Child, and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is licensed in the State of Ohio and has an inactive license in the State of Michigan as well. He specializes in the treatment of ADHD, anxiety, depressive and bipolar mood disorders. He also provides TMS treatment and Spravato for major depressive disorder in the office
His outside interests include Red Wings Hockey, long distance running, listening to alternative music and watching foreign movies, (whenever possible).
